Broken Promises
On April 17, 2001 the Chicago Coalition of Native American Community held a protest at the State of Illinois Building to highlight their disappointment with Governor Ryan. Their concerns went beyond the ‘Chief Illiniwik’ controversy. The Coalition demanded that the Governor fulfill his obligations under House Resolution 204 by the 91st General Assembly to address Illinois’ lack of attention to the health, education, child welfare, employment and economic development needs of Native Americans. The show documents the protest and statements made by Coalition leaders, including their opposition to native-based sports mascots.
