Illinois Humanities Council Awards Grant for Labor History Documentary |
Mahomet, IL) Local documentary producer, Greg Boozell and the Chicago-based Committee for Labor Access were awarded a grant by the Illinois Humanities Council to develop the video, "No Backward Step".
While few remember that king coal once provided an important economic foundation for the central and southern Illinois, few also remember that this region was once the battleground for a bloody conflict lasting years, which pitted coal miner against coal miner. "No Backward Step" is a one hour video documentary which will present this conflict through the story of the Progressive Miners of America (PMA) and their struggle to democratize the coal fields of Illinois during the 1930's.
Producer Greg Boozell notes, "The Progressive Miners of America provided us a genuine example of rank and file democracy and collective courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Understanding the history of the PMA can help expand our collective political imagination and offer possibilities for our future."
The documentary is slated for completion by the end of 2003.
"No Backward Step" is made possible in part by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly. |
