President to stump in capital

SPRINGFIELD -- President Bush is scheduled to campaign in Illinois' capital city Sunday as part of a nationwide push to generate excitement about Republican candidates.
Bush, who has been taking time away from diplomatic summits to campaign in hot races across the country in the closing weeks of the election season, is tentatively set to appear with members of the statewide GOP ticket at an 11 a.m. event at the Old State Capitol.
Though the White House had not yet released his schedule for Sunday, Bush is expected to speak at about noon.
Helping local candidates
In addition to trying to give a boost to Attorney General Jim Ryan's gubernatorial chances, Bush also will focus on helping U.S. Rep. John Shimkus of Collinsville in his race against Democratic U.S. Rep. David Phelps of Eldorado.
"I think it's a great boost for our ticket," said Ryan. "It certainly will help me. It will certainly help John Shimkus."
In the weeks leading up to Tuesday's balloting, the president has been crisscrossing the nation to campaign for Republican candidates. Last week he made stops in North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama -- all of which have close races that could determine control of the House and the Senate, as well as the governor's mansion.
The Phelps-Shimkus race in Illinois' 19th Congressional District is the tightest legislative battle in Illinois.
Redistricting after the 2000 Census eliminated one Illinois congressional seat and put both congressmen in the same district.
Heading north
On Saturday, Bush is scheduled to stop in Tennessee and Georgia. He will stay overnight in Florida before making his way north to Illinois.
Bush last visited Illinois in May to help Ryan raise money in his race against Democratic U.S. Rep. Rod Blagojevich.
The first-term chief executive also signed on to do a voter turnout push in various states through the use of recorded telephone messages.
Ryan said he doesn't think the stop -- just two days before people head to the polls -- is too late to help him.
"I think a lot of my opponent's support is very soft," said Ryan. |
