Some background on abuse and reaction to it on UC IMC |
The following is information compiled and presented the UC IMC Steering group in June, 2002 in regard to a persistent abuser of our website that began in April. As you can see, the person responsible for this has a group of rather obvious patterns in his behavior. We originally called him the Caplock Crackpot, even though he did seem to have a name that he favored. Is it just chance that the person, from the start, seemed to indicate that he was someone named Dan, despite using many different nicks during the course of his abuse?
We dealt with this person by deciding to ban him from our website the middle of June. This seemed to further enrage an already disturbed individual and he attacked us repeatedly by engaging in crude denial of service attacks consisting of, at times, hundreds of copies of repetitive posts for hours on end, continuing into August when the switchover to Dada made his mode of attack unworkable, spoiling his fun.
Then, out of the blue, a person named Dan, on the global IMC lists, became a harsh critic of the Ford Foundation grant that some members of the UC IMC was instrumental in working on. This Dan had an extremely negative opinion of UC IMC, to the point of accusing us of being CIA and Mossad agents, for no obvious or rational reason (and we are obviously NOT agents for either Israel or the U.S. governments.)
This was especially both comical and unreasonable, considering that by now we were beginning to realize that this was, in all likelihood, the same person who defaced, vandalized, and, worst of all, posted comments that caused extreme personal distress to friends and family of Ahmed ben Souda, a local activist in the Israel divestment campaign, claiming that ben Souda was dead.
Dan was apparently pissed at us for ruining his game, one that has left many IMCs with Newswires often monopolized by his behavior. The difference was that we had stood up to this bully, whoever he was and is. And the seemingly misdirected anger of "cuibono" finally made sense to us.
There are a number of repeated themes, as I've already mentioned. The one that most clearly connects the Dan here to Dan Elliott is the extreme fondness for the use of the word "zionazi" that they both share. As with most of this, any single item in coincidence with what we know is Dan Elliott's work, mostly on IMCP and SFIMC, would be simply just a coincidence. However, the mass of evidence of almost innumerable coincidences cannot be ignored, especially when that person is trying to whack your website and your IMC in any way he can.
The mass of evidence presented here, which is just the portion leading up to our decision to ban the personality Dan on our website in June, is backed up by other hard evidence that is in our possession about this case that all point to him. Did the previous Dan just walk away for all his seemingly out-of-control anger? Nope, he's still a regular visitor here. Is it merely a coincidence that another Dan rose out of nowhere to suddenly be our worst enemy on the IMC global lists. I don't think that is a coincidence and I think that there are many who would be far more inclined to believe us, than Dan Elliott's protestations of complete innocence in this affair. There certainly is only one way that Dan Elliott would be so thoroughly convinced that we are the heart of "zionazi" power in the IMC network, despite his claims to NEVER having been here before.
Other IMCs can work their way through this and make their own decisions about the reasons some of us here at UC IMC are convinced that the two Dan's are far more than a coincidence. I suppose there could be an entirely innocent explanation for all this, but I personally doubt it. Mr. Elliott is welcome to take this material and argue that it couldn't be him.
Now, into the information that has been available before on our email list, but which is presented here on the UC IMC website for the first time. It has been updated so that it can access the old Active database where all of the material presented below is. This was all posted previous to our current Dada software being installed. There are a few links and graphics that may not work because of this.

The very last part of this with article numbers 5939, 5943, 5946, and 5952 has info on articles hidden today from the Caplock Crackpot. As you can see from a stroll through this extensive document, this person has been a persistent abuser of the UCIMC website in a number of ways, as I detail below. I think enough time has been spent on dealing with this person, whose is easily identifiable by his style, even with the wide variety of pseudonyms which he adopts. Today's hidings of his slop, based mostly on the fact that they do not serve to promote discourse here on our website, will be discussed at next Sunday's Steering group meeting.
However, given the extensive, repetitive pattern of this easily identifiable behavior, I will also suggest that this person's future posts here at UCIMC be hidden. While there are a wide variety of names used by this person to post under, a reading of the cited works below should convince most people that it isn't very difficult to figure out who the author of these sorts of posts actually is at this point.

"Flooding or Spamming of Posts - this is when a single individual posts multiple times in a short period in a manner that indicates that the poster's purpose is to flood the newswire or push other posts off the front page of the IMC website, which typically only contains ten to twenty of the most recent posts. This type of posting behavior can only truly be identified after several occurrences, and depends heavily on the amount of volume of posts. It can be difficult to stop because posters can change screen names at a whim. Therefore the utmost care must be taken to make sure that only posts that are made by a known "spammer" are hidden.
"Off-Topic Posts - this is perhaps the most difficult category of inappropriate posts to judge, since the IMC Newswire intends to be a forum that is open to a broad range of topics and ideas. Nonetheless there are posts that are baldly and clearly inappropriate, whose purpose seems clearly to be other than informing, educating or adding to a public discourse. In the worst cases their appearance on the IMC Newswire may indeed discourage other visitors from using the site. Isolated posts are typically not problematic, and so the problem of off-topic posts is usually related to flooding or spamming. Therefore the frequency of off-topic posts of a particular type should be considered when deciding whether to hide them."
The following links to are provided to illustrate a pattern of posting behavior "whose purpose seems clearly to be other than informing, educating or adding to a public discourse."
Among the specific problems noted are:
Abuse of long, unbroken lines of text to make the stories of others difficult to read.
Posting fake stories, including that "Larry is dead" and the one about a woman from Urbana being injured in the Middle East.
Repeated use of insulting and abusive language with others commenters
Reposting of comments as articles:
Repeated use of all caps in conjunction with inappropriate comments
Imitated the identities of other posters with the intent create a disruptive atmosphere.
Posting links to file downloads of a questionable nature.

Is this a picture of Dan, our problem child? I don't know, but the timing of its appearance may be more than coincidental. Dan appears to have arrived with the flood of mostly rightwing and often racist comments posted in reply to the story about the "Fightin' Whities". I just ran into this concoction. I had no idea so much creativity was being expended in UC IMC's effort to evade the simple questions I posed.
I live in Sacramento Califas; I am a well known activist here & have been since Reagan was elected. Before that I was an activist at Sonoma State where I chaired the UFW support committee & led a boycott w/picket line which led to the cafeteria pledging to buy only Union Label lettuce.
Before that I was active in various things in SF; just to mention one that is on my mind because of the march down Market St day before yesterday: I helped Bob Scheer and others plan & organize the April 22 -- 1971 it must have been -- march and the "expo" at Golden Gate Park, where my friend Lee Hester had a choice spot for his "outside" (or "postbop"?) tenor musings.
All this stuff about me spamming the UC site is just a way of confusing the issue. Either these folks are soft on zionism or they're not. Who I am, whether I'm fit to be accepted in "respectable" society, or what my motivations may or may not be is beside the point. What matters is what lies behind these games being played with the Ford Foundation.
I'm satisfied that the FF is a CIA collaborating outfit. That is, in the sense that I use "CIA" as a quick catch-all umbrella term designating whichever bunch of spooks has been assigned to the IMC file.
I think I observed a pattern that closely paralleled traditional CIA methods of operation. So I tried to blow the whistle & get some attention on what UC IMC and this Meinrath were doing. I expected that there would be some kind of outraged denial of any zionist or CIA connection etc.
What I didn't anticipate was the barrage of lies and Ad Hominem defense tactics. First Hagy tried to say I was the same person as this spam artist, when there is nothing to connect me to any of that type of activity anywhere anytime.
I may post long statements that persons with a shaky hold on English grammar may find hard to follow. I do apologize to anyone for whom English is a second language because I know it must be frustrating. But I've spent so many hours listening to people converse in languages I didn't understand, cracking up over jokes that went right past my little poquito etc -- so I'm sorry but some things can't be helped.
These people kept pretending to be offended by my sometimes colorful mode of expression -- but that is not really what was bothering them. They just wanted, and still want, to shut me up, to prevent people from hearing what I have to say.
First they blocked me from the Process List; they said to put my case on the Resolve List so I started to do that; then they started talking about blocking me from that, so I started to post the whole story to the main IMC webpage, this one here. But just now I found that typing "qb" or "Cuibono" into Search got me only a page telling me there had been an "error" and a bunch of nerdese gobblygook.
I found this post via Google search -- next I suppose they'll block me from that.
They keep saying "obviously, we aren't this" and "of course it's ridiculous to think that we" etc. -- but it's just not that clear to me, I'm sorry.
I've been around the block a couple times in my sixty seven years, and have developed a nose for bullshit as a result of being taken to the cleaners so many times. And my nose continues to tell me: "something seriously not right here, man".
Not that I'm infallible -- far from it. But I do have this sense that usually tells me when I'm on thin ice. I tend to get uptight when I'm wrong about something involving another or other human being(s). And when I get uptight, I begin by retreating to more solid ground.
But I get no signals from my connection to the Big Self that I am off course. My "irritation" is purely abstract, in the realm of words. You fire off bad words, I make the appropriate response. But it's all totally emotionally neutral here. I could be working a crossword puzzle. A question or problem is posed, I fill in the blanks.
Somebody lies about me, and after being given a couple weeks to retract or revise etc., just lets the lie stand, then that person if male is a punk motherfucker. Just like one & one is two. Elementary; any ten year old kid playing out in my street understands it perfectly. I mean I'm just putting myself on the record, lest there be any doubt.
But I think I'll make some more attempts to see if I can bring up the more recent stuff I posted, and see if the UC honchitos have had any comment.
