The Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort, a Champaign-Urbana based grassroots group, continues a high level of activity into the group's second year. |
URBANA - Peace-oriented community members gathered at Urbana's Independent Media Center on October 20, more than a year after the group's first meeting on the eve of US bombing in Afghanistan. Although the numbers are different--the first meetings drew over 100, while current meetings attract 20-30 each week--the group's actions remain vigorous. At this evening's meeting, for instance, the group announced:
* An anti-war demonstration at a busy interstate exit (Prospect & I-74, Saturday 10/25 from 2-4 p.m.)
* A planned visit to Champaign by the "Palestinian Truth Tour" (October 25, 7 p.m., Illinois Disciples Foundation; 1/2 hour video, speakers from Int'l Solidarity Movement, display of artwork by children in the Jenin Refugee Camp)
* A celebrity anti-war postcard exhibit (Celebrities are asked to doodle anti-war postcards and return them to the group. The cards will be reproduced and sold. Some are already coming in!)
* A group of 20 students and community members will attend an anti-war rally in Washington DC during the weekend of October 26
* An anti-war literature table at the farmer's market will continue to be staffed from 8 - noon.
Meetings have evolved from their original format. Currently, meetings begin at 5 p.m. with an opening presentation (tonight's was by the South Asia Collective, others have focused on the war in Colombia, Mexican reactions to the war on terror, etc.), followed by a weekly review of the past week's war news presented by Green Party candidate for Congress Carl Estabrook. Brief reports by working groups, announcements, and any new business follow, and by 6:30 the large group breaks into working groups.
The meetings are open to anyone who cares to attend.
