Union organizing is moving closer and closer to the local Borders Books store in the North Prospect big-box 'hood in Champaign. |
Another Borders store files for a union election, the 11th in the last 6 years.
A Real Labor Day Event
On Labor Day, during a stop on Jim Hightower's Rolling Thunder tour in St. Paul, employees of the Minneapolis Borders Books and UFCW 789 Prez Bill Pearson announced to a roaring crowd that UFCW Local 789 will get a chance to act as bargaining agent on behalf of Borders workers in Minneapolis.
A solid majority of employees have signed authorization cards with the union, but Borders management has refused to immediately recognize the union. The next step the employees will take is submitting the cards to the National Labor Relations Board, which will schedule a secret ballot election, probably within 4-6 weeks.
This will be the first union election at a Borders store since the spring of 2001. Ten previous stores have held elections, four voted the union in. None are currently under contract.
Employees of the Gurnee, Illinois store are also organizing with the UFCW, but they haven't asked for recognition of their union yet.
