AIC Position On IMCP Failure Current rating: 6
07 Sep 2002
There is no text on the AIC website to confirm the following information, but it appears that this notice is legitimate. It is important to be cautious in evaluating stories on the Jerusalem IMC open Newswire, since it has been subject to a great deal of COINTELPRO-type spamming recently, but, if confirmed, this marks an important turning point in the internal struggle going on within IMC-P. ML
IMC IMCP hamla.jpg
IMCP is today involved in a partisan and sectarian quarrel with which we want no part.

Dear Friends,

As of year 2000 the Alternative Information Center proposed to individuals and organisations in the area of Bethlehem (Palestine) to develop a local media center networked with the IMC network. Our proposition recognized both the global importance of IMC project and the centrality of the cause of Palestinian liberation. Though our own youth group and other connections we sought to develop the impetus to create and run an IMC site run by Palestinians and in full recognition of the independence of the IMC from the AIC.

The AIC collective understands that the Palestinian Intifada is central to the global struggle against imperialism and it wars in the Arab East, in Central Asia, in Africa and in Latin America. We, like IMC, recognise that the liberation of the Palestinian people is conditioned by the outcome of the struggle between the interests of international capital and social justice. For this reason, the AIC was ready to support the building of the IMC Palestine out of its own slim resources, providing space, facilities, connectivity and support staff.

The AIC was very pleased to host an IMC. The AIC gives special attention to local and global radical democratic struggles and the colonial nature of the State of Israel. The AIC collective is a Palestinian-Israeli venture that disseminates information, research and political analysis on Palestinian and Israeli societies as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while promoting cooperation between Palestinians and Israelis based on the values of social justice, solidarity and community involvement.

Because of our continued commitment to these shared values and practices, the Alternative Information Center collective will continue to seek deeper cooperation with the IMC network and will continue to cooperate with it wherever it operates, and in whatever way it is in our power to assist.

However, it is with deep regret that we are forced to announce that due the latest developments in IMCP, we are forced to detach our collective from IMCP in respect to hosting this group.

IMCP is today involved in a partisan and sectarian quarrel with which we want no part. The AIC fully rejects the discriminatory, sectarian and male-chauvinistic trends that have appeared in the IMCP. We take particular exception to the sectarian conditions imposed on the local participation in the IMCP project. We believe that the disagreements created by the self interest of individuals/groups are not only destructive to the group but impact extremely negatively on the Palestinian cause. The behaviour of certain actors is reinforcing internal division and creating distrust and acrimony within a community already under brutal repression.

At present, IMC Palestine represents neither the ethos of IMC nor the AIC and we strongly recommend that the IMC Palestinian site be suspended. We recommend this not because of any interest in AIC involvement with the IMCP, but because it is a destructive force within the Palestinian community.

We also recommend that IMC seeks to gather the opinions of all the participants in the failed IMCP, in order to move forward with the rebuilding of the Palestinian IMC in such a way that it reflects the goals of social justice disseminated by IMC and thus to be a force for positive support for the Palestinian people.

With respect and in solidarity.
The AIC

I have seen nothing on IMC-J that would give credence to this posting. This may be real or is it a dirty trick?
Two Days Later

It appears a copy of this story was hidden by ML on 9/7 and no other Indymedia has reported this AIC notice. It appears this story is a fake and I'm bothered that it been allowed to remain visible for two days.

It would be helpful if ML could clarify the situation once and for all -- and hide this story (again) if it is indeed false.
Follow-up To IMCP-Failure

As you could well understand, I was more than a bit suspicous of this notice (which only appeared on the Urbana-Champaign IMC). So I emailed AIC asking them to confirm or deny the report. This was the reply I received:

------------------------------------

The AIC would like to confirm that the statement by the AIC in respect to withdrawing support for the IMCP is genuine. I have no idea how it ended up where it did or who ML is or how it ended up being published before today (as was our intention the notice was sent to imc-process (at) lists.indymedia.org this morning). Still such details are largely irrelevant as no alteration has been made to the text. As final confirmation the text will be posted on the AIC website http://www.alternativenews.org later today, or at the latest tomorrow.

We hope this clarifies matters and, again, we would like to express our support for IMC.

With respect.

The AIC.

Now, for all of those who have called me a troll or a liar or some other insult, this is for you...I was right!

My thanks goes out to AIC for doing its small part to "Stop the Hate Now!!!"
Where This Came From

This was found posted on the IMC-P Newswire, as I originally stated, on Sept. 7.

I am sad to hear that IMC-P has had this alarming situation develope. It's good that the situation has been far better described by AIC than previously on IMC-P itself.

The story was never hidden here, but simply scrolled off the Newswire. When the 911 stories were moved to Razorwire, this story came back up on the Newswire.
Follow-up To ML's Correction

The link ML provided to the story that appeared on IMC-Palestine is blank (accept for qb's comment). It was in this edited condition when I first followed ML's link several days ago -- the impression was UCIMC was the only source of the story.

Secondly, the story does appear on UCIMC's hidden list (http://www.ucimc.org/newswire/hidden/index.php) with the comment "Hidden by ml with code:"

I can't help you with the current status of the story on IMC-P. You'll have to discuss that with them.

As for the hidden story:

This was a duplicate post.

This post (the one you are reading here) has been up all along on the UC IMC Newswire:
