Fight discrimination -- Protests scheduled against House Bill 101 Current rating: 0
07 May 2001
House Bill 101, which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to
the Illinois Human Rights Act, is in the final stages of moving on to the
Senate, and the bill needs your push to pass.

Meet at 10:30am each Wednesday morning (5/9, 5/16, 5/23) at the parking lot between The Art Theater and the Great Impasta in downtown Champaign (transporation provided) -- more info below.
House Bill 101, which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to
the Illinois Human Rights Act, is in the final stages of moving on to the
Senate, and the bill needs your push to pass.

We've got exactly three Wednesdays left to persuade the Senate Executive
Committee to allow hearings on House Bill 101 so that the bill can
eventually be released to the full Senate for a vote. This is only the
second time since 1977 that a similar bill has gotten this far. Yesterday,
the Executive Committee tabled hearings on the 20 or so bills before them.

Here's the plan: We will be at the Capitol in Springfield for the next
three Wednesdays (5/9, 5/16, 5/23) leaving at 10:30am each morning from the
parking lot between The Art Theater and the Great Impasta in downtown
Champaign (transportation provided). Each time we go we will engage in
several activities. Please pick a level of engagement that you feel
comfortable with and recruit a friend:

1) Lobby Senate Executive Committee members and your state Senator and
be a witness to actions 2-4
2) Demonstrate in the rotunda (we have secured a permit for all three
Wednesdays)
3) Attend the Senate Executive Committee hearing on HB 101 and register
to speak on behalf of the bill
4) Engage in civil disobedience outside the Senate Executive Committee
hearing room and/or the Senate with possible risk of detainment and/or a
small fine

Witnesses are also needed to take pictures and make sure that the press is
present if and when the police detain those of us who wish to push the
limits on behalf of our civil rights.

We also need folks who can donate money for gas, parking, and possibly
fines.

Only with a strong force and sheer persistence will we be able to get this
bill to pass. Your energy, time, and courage are needed now!

For more information, please call: Mary Lee (352-6110), Kimberlie
(359-9884) or Meg (489-5905). Or email: Kkranich (at) aol.com

Thank you!
