FRENCH KICKS
French Kicks are not a traditional rock'n'roll band. Although they
have elements of snarly garage rock, slick new wave, and giddy classic
mod-pop, they remain completely unique. The four of them work together
like draughtsmen creating musical architecture - a note is never
wasted, a drop is never spilled. Their songs always seem to be on an
angle, hovering just at breaking point. They cut to the quick with
lurching riffs and palpitating percussion, but they are also cute and
coltish and undeniably catchy. At heart, this is simple pop music,
with hooks hookier than velcro and disarmingly pretty three-part
harmonies. They play in Urbana after recently touring with fellow
Startime labelmates The Walkmen (playing to a sold-out show in
Chicago) and then Guided by Voices and later Girls Against Boys.
DORIS HENSON
Like a phoenix arising from its ashes, Lawrence, KS-based Doris Henson
combines ex-members from Proudentall, Giants Chair, and Nymb. Four
months since its inception and already one western tour down. Doris Henson
are reminiscent of a combination of early David Bowie, Talking Heads, and
Neutral Milk Hotel.
THESTRINGANDRETURN
Hailing from Kansas City, MO, thestringandreturn (on SunSeaSky
Productions) are with Doris Henson on their first tour since a
two-year hiatus. Theyproduce restrained yet urgent guitar-based indie
rock in the vein of Codeine, Acetone, or Rex, with hints of Galaxie
500, My Bloody Valentine, and Radiohead here and there. You'll be
glad you didn't miss this opener.
All IMC shows are non-smoking and all ages. Non-alcoholic beverages and
snacks will be available.
