BLACK CAT MUSIC (on Lookout! Records) - www.blackcatmusic.com
This is what happens when punk rock grows up. "hands in the estruary,
torso in the lake" is Black Cat Music's third release to date. Their
unique brand of rock and roll (like Nick Cave meeting the Rolling
Stones) has been thrilling audiences and listeners since the summer of
1998. This album reinforces that fervent underground popularity. The
group has extended the reach of their hard driving, nervous breakdown
rock and roll, and at the same time developed their own pained blues.
This is not a band whose influences are easily traced. Time spent
playing in punk bands has certainly left its mark, but as is usually
the case when it comes to Black Cat Music, nothing is what it seems.
This is a dark album, but never nihilistic. It is rock, it is blues,
it is goth, it is frantic, it is a portrait of the darker side of
modern life.
THE BEAUTY SHOP (on Mud Records)
When the Allmusic guide refers to Champaign's own Beauty Shop as performing
"dark Americana dirges with wicked deadpan drawls," they couldn't be more
dead-on. Local alt-country-punk sensation John Hoeffleur, along with
longtime Beauty Shopper Ariane Peralta have picked up a new drummer and are
playing out again. The resurfacing should come as no surprise to those with
an ear to the ground, as the Beauty Shop buzz recently returned with the
announcement that the band's debut "Yr Money or Yr Life" will have a UK
release on the venerable Glasgow-based Spit & Polish imprint (which you
can't mention without a nod to the label's founder, Francis Macdonald of the
legendary Teenage Fanclub), who repeatedly describe the Beauty Shop as
"brilliant" and "simply devine".
THE INVISIBLE
Eerie and psychotic garage rock guaranteed to send a groove through your feet.
KLIPSPRINGER
Hailing out of Milwaukee, Klipsringer are heading out on a Midwest tour,
featuring some ex-Notaword members as well as a member of a Promise Ring
side project. Reminscent of Guided By Voices or the Replacements, it's
rock and roll from the second most drunken band in Milwaukee.
All IMC shows are non-smoking and all ages. Non-alcoholic beverages and
snacks will be available.
