help find info/witnesses
**DISTRIBUTE WIDELY**
it's been revealed that there were in fact deaths as a direct result of police actions in Quebec City during the summit of the americas protests. we are already more than halfway there to another kent state. |
this is a two-fold request: firstly, forward this as widely as you can, and don't just resign it to email. let people know. secondly,
***we are looking for people who have details on the deaths***,
especially the partially confirmed plastic bullet death. if anyone has any more information, or knows where to find it, please, all of you, speak up and send any pertinent information, no matter how incomplete, no matter whether you think someone already would have done it, to

...we want to get information about this out in as many ways possible once the picture starts forming.
what follows is two excerpts from indymedia.

"non-lethal" (english) by street medic 6:46am Wed Apr 25 '01
Considering that there is no way this fact will find it's way into the news I would like to provide a tragic example of just how dangerous these plastic bullets are. During the Quebec protests a young woman was shot in the throat. Unfortunately, no one could get to her on time and she died in the street. Tragically, her death was not the only one. An elderly woman was trapped in her apartment and asphyxiated on the tear gas fumes. I hope that this outrage is pushed into action. Please make as much noise as possible about this and be sure to seek the best protection possible in the upcoming protests. Our streets are turning into a war zone but I refuse to give up my freedom of speech.

Cofirmed...Somewhat (english) by Nightwalker 2:24am Tue May 1 '01
Medics who checked in at the clinic on Sunday, April 22 were told that two deaths had been confirmed the previous day. One protestor had apparently been shot in the neck and left to die by the police. (Anonymous, the clinic staff were aware of the other protestor who underwent surgery, and clearly stated that these were two different people.) An elderly woman was also reportedly asphyxiated in her own apartment from tear gas, although reading an account in the FTAA Diary (link below) leads me to wonder if she actually died of induced stress, or if two elderly woman died, one unknown to the clinicians. Either way, two or three deaths which have been ignored by both corporate and independent media...pretty fuckin' sad. |

From Quebec CMAQ-Clarification on the rumors |

First of all, I was working the dispatch desk at the press room during the entire weekend, tons of half-informed reports like this came in over the news line. We considered something unconfirmed unless at least three different people gave us the details independently of each other, and even then we contacted every official agency we could think of to confirm. From all the reports I’ve received, it was a guy who was shot in the throat with a plastic bullet, and he is still alive, but may never speak again, and the corporate news jumped on this a week ago. The elderly woman who died, died of a heart attack, possibly induced by the tear gas or by the F***ing war zone outside the nursing home on Turnbull. I’ve heard nothing about this third person who was shot in the throat. I personally think it has to do with crossed wires of communication. I think we should really question every piece of information we get, take everything with a grain of salt, and try to confirm through every channel we can think of to stop rumors like this from spreading. Otherwise all we will be doing is misinforming people, and that is not what the indymedia is about. |
