"It is a pogrom, a real pogrom, there is no other way to describe what happened," said a Norwegian member of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH), describing the rampage by hundreds of heavily armed Jewish militants against Palestinians and their property in Hebron.
"The rampage was totally unprovoked, the Palestinians were under curfew, and the rabid settlers began shooting indiscriminately at Palestinian homes and vandalizing their property in full view of Israeli soldiers and police."
The Norwegian observer asked that his name not be mentioned since the rules governing TIPH's deployment in the effectively divided city don't allow the unarmed observers to talk to the press.
One Turkish observer, who also refused to mention his name for the same reason, called the rampaging settlers "Jewish Gestapo."
"I think it is fair to call them Gestapo. They attacked innocent people in their homes without any provocation and they killed a young girl for nothing except for being Arab."
The Turkish officer said he was shocked by the fact that the Israeli army and police didn't make real efforts to rein in the rampaging settlers nor confiscated their weapons.
"It is clear the Israeli army and police deal very gently with those criminals."
During the rampage, which lasted more than two hours, the settlers opened fire from automatic rifles on Palestinian neighborhoods, killing 13-year-old Niveen Jamjoub as she was sitting in her balcony.
When her brother, Marwan, sought to rescue her, he, too, was shot and seriously wounded.
One settler stabbed and seriously injured an Arab child, Ahmed Natsha, 10, while another child, identified as Fawwaz Radwan Idris, 9, received a gunshot wound in his skull and hospital sources said he was in serious but stable condition.
All in all, more than 20 Palestinian civilians, many of them children, were either shot or stabbed by the rampaging settlers' fire.
In addition, dozens of Arab shops and business were either broken into, vandalized or looted in broad daylight by the settlers.
Settlers leaders in Hebron, a hotbed of ‘Jewish cultists and fanatics‘, claimed the rampage was in response of Palestinians throwing stones towards them.
However, eyewitnesses, including some Israeli policemen, refuted the settlers' claim, saying it was a pure invention.
Israeli journalist, Roni Sheked, also contended the settlers were lying.
He described their rampage in Hebron as a “complete provocation."
There are around 300 ultra-orthodox messianic Jewish cultists living in the midst of more than 170,000 Palestinians under round-the-clock protection from the Israeli army.
In 1994, one of those cultists, Baruch Goldstein, attacked Palestinian worshipers at the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, killing at least 29 worshipers and maiming scores others before he himself was killed by survivors.
Most of Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip fervently supported the massacres and erected a monument in the settlement of Kiryat Arba'a in honor of Goldstein.
Goldstein's tomb in the settlement has become a pilgrimage site visited by Jews from as far as California. |
