JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The eldest son of a Jewish settler family ambushed on a West Bank road described on Sunday how a Palestinian gunman killed his parents and a brother but decided not to shoot five other children in the shattered car. |
"A terrorist suddenly started shooting from the right side of the road," Zvi Dichstein, 20, told Army Radio about Friday's attack near the West Bank city of Hebron.
"My mother, in the passenger seat next to my father, was hit immediately. Shuv-el was shot in the neck. His head slumped over a book. Everyone was sure he was sleeping," he said about his nine-year-old brother, buried along with parents Yaakov and Hannah on Sunday.
Dichstein had not gone along for the drive from the Jewish settlement of Psagot to visit friends elsewhere in the West Bank. He said he was conveying the accounts of some of the five siblings, aged two to 17, who survived.
"The older children realized that mother was dead. Father stopped the car...he held mother's head and began to cry.
"He got out of the car, apparently to check on the children in the back. The terrorist came down from the hill...and everyone watched him shoot father in the chest. And that was that."
It was then, Dichstein said, that the gunman took stock.
"The terrorist lifted his eyes and looked at my brothers and sisters for several seconds. Then he went away. He didn't shoot them."
Settlers have been frequent targets of Palestinian attacks during the 22-month-old uprising for independence. The international community regards settlements as illegal under international law. Israel disputes this.
Minutes before targeting the Dichsteins' car, the gunman fired at another vehicle, killing an Israeli soldier who lived in a settlement near Hebron.
Jewish settlers who attended his funeral on Sunday shot dead a Palestinian girl, 8, while rampaging through homes in the city, Palestinian witnesses said.
