Action gainst the IMF and World Bank in D.C.! Current rating: 0
23 Jul 2002
ACC People's Strike: Sept 27th. MGJ Direct Action: Sept.28th
After weeks of wrangling and a date change by the IMF, the MGJ has finally settled on a date and rough scenario: we will launch a direct action quarantine of the meetings on Sept. 28th. here is the new call to action.
-------------------------------- The Moblization for Global Justice Statement: -------------------------------- After weeks of wrangling and a date change by the IMF, the MGJ has finally settled on a date and rough scenario: we will launch a direct action quarantine of the meetings on Sept. 28th. Since IMF structural adjustment is the economic equivalent of smallpox, WE WILL QUARANTINE IT SAFELY AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC! Quarantine means nothing goes in, nothing comes out. The direct action begins in the afternoon, trapping the delegates in the meeting and the scenario WG will decide in the next few weeks whether to extend it through the night and/or through Sun after that. The ideal would be to, like any other quarantine, keep it in effect until the disease is eliminated, meaning in this case that they agree to cancel the debt unconditionally and end structural adjustment as a result. Of course, only those delegates that make it through the People's Strike (ACC action) will be affected by this. http://www.globalizethis.org/ ------------------------ The ACC Statement: ------------------------ The People's Strike: A Day of Non-Compliance and Resistance September 27th Convergence: Skillshares, Meetings and Preperation September 25 and 26th Date Change! The IMF and World Bank have moved their meetings in fear of the planned People's Strike that was to occur on October 1st. They have changed the meeting dates to September 28 and 29 to try to avoid the toll the Strike would take on their ability to effectivly hold their meetings in DC on the 1st of October. We recognize this as a victory in our organizing for the People's Strike because we have effectively disrupted the IMF and World Bank's plans to start the meetings on October 1st. The Anti-Capitalist Convergence has now changed the date of The People's Strike in order to hold it the day before the meetings to extend the protests of the meetings into the work week and to Shut Down the City the day before their fall meetings. We are moving the day of non-compliance and resistance and now are calling for the strike on September 27. The convergence with meetings, trainings and other preperation will be on September 25 and 26. The ACC is tentativly planning a general assembly on the People's Strike the last weekend in August. We encourage spokespeople from affinity groups and organizations as well as intersted individuals from anywhere who will be in DC for the People's Strike to come take part in this meeting, get an update on how organizing is coming along in DC, and consult and discuss direct action plans. In Washington DC - August 31 and September 1. Circuit writes on Monday July 22 2002 @ 10:36PM PDT:Debunking myths about direct action in Washington DC: Myth #1 - Washington DC was made to handle riots. Yes, it was designed to handle invading armies. However, no city in the world is safe from people intent on shutting it down. Due to the design of Washington DC, and the fact that the IMF/WB building lies at the heart of it, attempting to shut down the meeting itself would probably fail. Shutting down the city, however, is pretty basic. Identify key areas, highways, intersections, etc., and blockade them. Remember that in the US capitol, all traffic in the morning is incoming and all traffic in the evening is outgoing. You won't even need to block both lanes. Myth #2 - The DC Police deal with protests all the time. Again, somewhat true. But does the Million Mom March compare in any way to A16? No matter how much A16 failed tactically, we still were able to throw the DC police for a loop for the first time in 30 years. And let's not forget that the Black Bloc at the inaugaration was able to break through the biggest US security operation in decades. And they weren't even very well prepared, compared to other Black Bloc's (ie, Quebec). The DC police are no more prepared for direct action than any other police force in the US. All they have is theoretical training, very little real world experience. If we were talking about the police force in Berlin, Seoul, Athens, or Buenos Aires, then, yes, they deal with this kind of thing all the time. The DC police, however, do not. Myth #3 - September 11th has affected our support across the US. If you feel this is true, then go into any 24-hour diner in America, and start talking about captalist greed and corporate corruption. After you have people's attention, start talking about privatization and the IMF/WB. I have a theory that the idea that the movement is fucked comes mostly from those who have isolated themselves from everyday people. An assumption is made that anybody who isn't currently down-with-the-cause is a reactionary patriotic asshole ready to pick up their gun and kill some commie pinkos at the first provocation. Not true. *VERY* not true. Myth #4 - A mass direct action in DC requires only that I show up. Wrong. It also requires that you organize. It's up to you to get people out to this, organize yourself into an affinity group, and think about a plan of action for when shit goes down. "Don't mourn, organize!"
