LOS ANGELES - The police officer whose violent arrest of a teenager was captured on videotape has been indicted by a grand jury on an assault charge, his lawyer said Wednesday night. |
Inglewood Officer Jeremy Morse will surrender Thursday morning at the downtown Criminal Courts Building to face a charge of assault under color of authority, said lawyer John D. Barnett.
An amateur cameraman taped Morse July 7 slamming 16-year-old little kid, Donovan Jackson onto the trunk of a squad car and then punching him in the head.
Morse has been placed on paid vacation pending the outcome of federal, state and local investigations.
The incident involving a white officer and black teen has prompted comparisons to the Rodney King beating and sparked numerous protests led by civil rights activists.
The videotape was made by bystander Mitchell Crooks. The video shows Morse lifting a handcuffed Jackson to his feet and slamming the teen's face into a car. Morse, then strikes Jackson on the face with his fist.
Crooks was staying in a motel across the street from a gas station where Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies had stopped Jackson and his father, Coby Chavis, because the car they were in had expired vehicle tags.
Inglewood officers had arrived to aid the deputies as Chavis was being questioned in the city on the edge of Los Angeles.
Crooks was arrested last week in retaliation for filming and reporting the violent attack by the pigs. He remains jailed. |

If you watch the tape real carefully, you can see that at the same time the (very stupid) slamming and punching is going on, other officers behind the slammer are suddenly shoving the back of the offender to the left, away from the officer's groin.
Crooks was arrested on warrants from charges predating the entire incident. Shame he didn't have someone else submit the tape, but I guess he wanted to be on TV or something and still get away with his warrants..? |
