Press reports indicate that the New York Police Department sees no reason to discipline four officers involved in the henious 41- gunshot murder of Amadou Diallo. |
NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik announced Friday that the four officers involved in the brutal killing of Amadou Diallo. Two seperate internal police panels agreed that the officers were "acting within departmental guidelines." In addition, NYPD sees no need for the men involved to undergo any retraining.
The killers have been on desk duty since the murder, without their guns. They will be given back their weapons and allowed to return to work, apparently until whenever Kerik determines that public attention has shifted enough to put them back on the streets of New York to threaten the lives of other innocent people.
Diallo was killed by a fusillade of 41 shots after being asked to identify himself by the officers. Reaching for his wallet, the men involved claimed they "were in fear for their lives," the standard cop excuse for "whoops, we screwed up" and then proceeded to unleash the fatal overkill. Diallo's family is sueing the culprits for $81 million dollars. The officers were acquitted in a stage-managed trial last year. It seems that they will escape any serious federal investigation of their violation of Diallo's civil rights, also.
This incident emphasizes the need for all police departments to be overseen by seperate, independent civilian review boards, something which do not exist in many communities, including Champaign, Cinncinnati, and Urbana. |
