A Cedar Rapids police officer creates incident arresting
fireworks violator. |
In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in a northwest side neighborhood,
witnesses were shocked and disgusted by the actions of
an arresting police officer. The incident began just
after the annual boat club fireworks display. A man with
a cane, who was recovering from a broken back, exploded
a firecraker in the presence of officers directing heavy
traffic. As the man was walking away, an officer, without
any verbal warning or identification, tackled the man
from behind. In the following struggle a night stick and
pepper spray were used to subdue the man, as friends and
relatives protested and eventually subdued the arresting
officer. Quickly several patrol cars arrived
and the 50+ people on the scene remained calm. An
ambulance arrived and the man was taken to the hospital.
Youths who were selling glow necklaces at the scence,
witnessed the entire incident. Speaking with them they
expressed shock but then cited other incidents of police
brutality in the city. |
