Knowing how much Americans are worried about the loss of innocent life in Palestine, I thought I'd summarize the number of Palestinians killed in the past 17 months.
This number does not include all those killed in Israel's most recent military invasion of the West Bank. They are still finding bodies in the rubble. This number represents only those killed through March 9, 2002.
The toll of Palestinian children 15 and younger is 151. That's a lot of Little League teams. Many of these children were shot through the head by Israeli snipers who, 200 yards away in armored vests and helmets, apparently feared a rock thrown by a 12-year-old that landed many yards short. I can easily imagine killing people. After all, I was in the Army. I cannot imagine lining up a child's head in the scope of my rifle and squeezing the trigger.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation in a recent story, Israel has the following assets: 134,000 army troops, 32,000 air force, 7,000 navy and 8,000 border police. The reserves are 400,000 for the army, 20,000 for the air force and 5,000 for the navy. In addition, Israel has 440 combat aircraft, 3,900 main battle tanks, 130 helicopters, 9,600 artillery tubes and 100 or more nuclear bombs.
Since the Palestinians have no army, no air force, no navy, no aircraft, no tanks, no helicopters and no nukes, one has to wonder indeed how these defenseless civilians can threaten Israel's existence. Gosh, you don't suppose Israeli and American politicians are lying, do you? Perish the thought.
I guess the Israeli army snipers must have been ordered to shoot all those children, for Palestinian children must be the toughest kids in the universe. I never heard of any other group of children able to frighten a whole nation like that.
That's funny, too, because all of the pictures I've seen of Palestinian children - dead, dying, bleeding or paralyzed - show kids who look like American children their age.

_thought_ the blood libel was dead.
You know, one of the very first things I tried to do here was get people to see that at least _some_ criticism of Zionist policy is grounded in antisemitism. There was a tacit assumption among progressives (and Buchananites as well, I may as well point out) that any time anyone used the word "antisemitism," the accused was purely and truly pure as the driven snow, and that the accusation was being tossed around for political purposes only. I tried to demonstrate that this is simply not the case. And the reply was, among some at least, the same old song: "You're only throwing the accusation of antisemitism because someone's criticising Israel."
Posts like the current one make my point in a better and more immediate way than I could. Dredging up the blood libel has nothing at all to do with geopolitics and everything to do with centuries-old antisemitic myth.
ML et al -- even though I find this post deeply offensive for reasons that oughta be obvious, I hope you won't hide it, because it's such a perfect example of exactly what I was talking about.

We do hide duplicate posts and there have been a bunch of them in the last few days, made by whoever the individual (I know, there have been different names listed as the author, but clearly one individual has been at the root of the vast majority of these posts) who has been flooding our Newswire with these stories. The Steering group yesterday also endorsed a more aggressive policy of grouping posts in order to prevent any one individual or viewpoint from dominating the Newswire here. So this particular post will not be hidden at this time.
On a personal note, the person posting these does as much damage to the cause of Palestine by this sort of approach as they do damage to Zionism. Considering that Zionism has done plenty of damage to itself during this sad affair, this seems to be a self-defeating strategy that is perhaps more rooted in nativist American anti-semitism than it is in any real support for the Palestinian cause. |

I agree that this isn't a very persuasive way to address Sharon and company; when the truth is bad enough, it doesn't need to be embellished by crap that's literally medieval.
