The Text of the Resolution

Whereas, Illinois Student Government is the "official voice of the student body" of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign;

Whereas, siginifact portions of the student body are offended by our University mascot, Chief Illiniwek;

Whereas, as mascot that should function to unite our campus divides it;

Whereas, Native American groups including but not limited to the Peoria Tribe have asked the University to cease the use of Chief Illiniwek as its mascot;

Be it resolved, that Illinois Student Government calls on the University to retire Chief Illiniwek in a manner honorable to Native Americans,

Let it be further resolved, that this retirement should be brought about by the adoption of the retirement option set out by the University of Illinois Trustee Roger Plummer in his report to the University of Illinois Board of Trustees at its March 2002 meeting.
Consistency Please...

Can you please retain some consistency in the references to "Native Americans". Half of the articles that I read on the Chief issue use "American Indian" or just plain "Indians" when referring to the group of people this issue is centralized upon.

Though popular terminology labels Native Americans as "Indians" or "American Indian", utilizing these descriptors is as ignorant as classifying all people of Latin American decent as being "Mexican", or all Asian/Asian-Americans as being "Chinese", etc...
Do you still believe that the Earth is still flat? If not, then do you now understand the difference between "Indians" and "Native Americans"?
