Local Leaders to Receive Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Awards |

A ceremony to honor Dr. King and present achievement awards, sponsored by the Urbana Human Relations Commissions, will be held at the Urbana Civic Center, 108 W. Water St, from noon to 1:30pm, Thursday, Jan. 10. Three local women will be honored for their work in promoting the principles that Dr. King stood for and gave his life for.
The first is Patricia Avery, recently elected chair of the Champaign County Board. Ms. Avery has served previuosly as Champaign County Recorder and in many volunteer capacities with groups such as A Woman's Fund and est Interests of Children.
The second is Esther Patt of the Urbana City Council. Esther has served as director of the Champaign-Urbana Tenant Union since 1979, served as president of Champaign County NOW and has also worked with many community organizations, including the Champaign County Living Wage Association.
Finally, the late Judy Wyatt will be honored for advocacy of issues concerning the disabled, particularly her work to designate adequate parking spaces for the disabled in downtown Urbana. |
