Dear Friends, The rodeo season has begun in Illinois, and it has taken no time at all for those involved in the abuse to display their character, or lack thereof. A SHARK investigator attended a rodeo sponsored by the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois last weekend, and documented the routine use of the electric prod on bulls in chutes.
There was also some tail twisting and tail raking on calves and steers. Tail
raking is where a rodeo worker agitates an animal by putting the victim's
tail up and over a piece of fencing, and then roughly pulling it back and
forth, causing considerable pain for the victim. As with the use of electric
shock, tail twisting and tail raking are among the ways rodeo people make
tame, domesticated animals act wild and mean.

Both shocking an animal in a chute and tail raking violates specific rules
set forth by the Department of Agriculture for the treatment of rodeo
animals. Their February 1, 2002 letter, sent to fair association, rodeo
associations and rodeo stock contractors states:

"The use of the electric prod on an animal in a chute, or just as the chute
is opened, will not be permitted."

The letter goes on to state that:

"Tail twisting, pulling and raking over fences when an animal is in a chute,
or just as the chute is being opened, will not be permitted."

A videotape of the rodeo is headed to the Department of Agriculture in
Springfield. We will also be in contact with the University of Illinois to
begin a dialogue on this matter. We'll keep you updated on just what happens
from there.

Switching gears, here is a quick piece of good news. Do you remember the
story of the Walker Brothers circus that visited Kane County, Illinois last
year? Many of you called and wrote to the sponsor, the Kane County Forest
Preserve District. You may remember that the Tiger Truck paid a visit to the
president of the District at his home.

Well, this year the circus is NOT coming back to Kane County. Thanks to
those of you who helped with this very important issue!

Kindest Regards,

Steve Hindi
