Americans for Balanced Energy Choices Updated August 2000 Description Americans for Balanced Energy Choices (ABEC) is a nonprofit group funded by railroads, coal producers and users, and electric utilities. It sponsors include Southern, the leading U.S. coal burner and the American Association of Railroads, whose members transport coal (Source: The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, April 21, 2000). Their advertisements advocate on behalf of the use of coal. Broadcast Issue Advocacy Activity Americans for Balanced Energy Choices began a national television campaign in April of 2000 advocating an increased use of coal for the nation's electrical needs. The ads say increased coal use led to improvements in the environment. The ad was scheduled to run indefinitely on CNN and Headline News (Source: The National Journal Group, July 11,2000). The total ad buy amounted to $300,000, according to the group's spokesperson (Source: The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, April 21, 2000).
