Keep up the good work! Online vote regarding Chief Illiniwek as a symbol of the U of I is overwhelmingly against. |
Please go once more to the website to voice your opinion (several times) against having the Chief be a symbol of the University of Illinois. Currently, 70.5% of those who have voted are opposed to keeping the Chief as the University's symbol. Please take five minutes to add to the opposition of retaining the Chief. |

The News-Gazette also ran an electronic poll last week. There were 7,541 votes cast, with 57% in favor of getting rid of the current mascot, 39% in favor of keeping the mascot the UI has, and 4% wanting a compromisewd mascot. This poll had results about 10 times larger than the typical N-G poll.

Loren Tate Ignores News-Gazette Poll Results |

Loren Tate, sports editor and obsessive supporter of the racist "Chief" mascot, devoted his entire column in today's (Wed., March 27) News-Gazette to attempting to convince the public that a long career is still ahead for the "Chief". It's interesting that a News-Gazette electronic poll (see link above) that had a record number of votes in support of dumping the "Chief" mascot ASAP somehow escaped his notice.
Of course, Tate is so stuck in the 19th Century that he may not have figured out how to use a computer yet, but he could nonetheless hardly be unaware of such a poll by his employer. |

It isn't a surprise. Even in the face of an increased number of calls against the chief on WDWS and the increased pressure from all directions (faculty, individual community members, student groups, community groups, national groups, Native American groups, religious groups) in the corporate media (expect locally), Evidence that contradicts the often repeated defense (more want it than don't, they are outsiders, they are just politically correct) is never acknowledged. I have noticed a slight lessening of the arrogance I once heard. But I haven't heard any sign of recognition of the polls.
I think the afternoon guy on WDWS, Brant Hansen is no longer pro-Chief (as opposed to anti-chief). He has pointed out the fatal flaw in the basic attack on the anti-chiefers that violates conservative ideology, though. He admits to a strong religious identity, and the old fave "We are in the majority, they are a small, vocal minority---they should shut up or leave" doesn't suit his views on abortion (which are grounded in Christianity). Guess he isn't interested in moving to a country that has outlawed abortion. Nor do I think he should have to. |
