help increase awareness! |
Dear Friends,
The News-Gazette (Champaign-Urbana's daily newspaper) is holding an online poll about "Chief Illiniwek." Please take a moment to vote against the "Chief."
The poll can be accessed from the main page of the News-Gazette website at www.news-gazette.com. The choices are: "Find a new mascot/symbol," "Keep him as he is now," and "Continue to try to find a compromise."
We do not know how long the poll will be online, so please vote NOW! And please forward this message to your friends, family, co-workers, etc. and urge them to vote against the "Chief."
We know that issues of racism and social justice cannot and should not be decided by popular opinion alone, but it never hurts for the anti-"Chief" movement to make a good showing, so please vote!
Thanks,
The PRC |

Check out the feature story on the use of racist mascots at the Madison IMC:

Lots of info there. Madison IMC has done a feature story on the issue because the University of Wisconsin is hosting the regional tournament NCAA men's basketball games this weekend in which the University of Illinois team is participating.
The 'Chief' could find himself in trouble when the homies call him out if he shows his paleface up there. |

It seems the News-Gazette poll is broken or that the population has been voting consistently anti-"Chief" for the last 24 hours. The polling percentages remain the same as they were in my last update, as they have during several checks I have made in the since then. |

The percentages stand as noted above. The total number of votes cast was 7,541. This is the largest numbers of votes cast in all the polls that the N-G website has run since last July, as far back as the records are listed at the link below. This "turnout" is approximately ten times larger than typical polls run in the past.
The community has spoken to the News-Gazette editorial board. Will we see the N-G now call for the retirement of the "Chief"?
I'm not holding my breath on that one. |
