The Steering Committee of the UC Independent Media Center is joining with other media activists around the country in endorsing a protest of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington D.C. this Friday, March 22. The protest is being organized by "The Angels of the Public Interest." Details and supporting materials are available through: http://www.mediatank.org/Angels.html or at http://www.americanresurrection.com/. Friday’s protest will be followed by a teach-in around issues of media consolidation and the public interest. Endorsed by a broad cross-section of progressive, feminist, youth, and other organizations working on issues of media and democracy, the events are intended to serve as a starting point for public education around the role of media in democracy.
Friday’s protest and Saturday’s teach-in are being held as a part of the third annual Media Democracy Week, a national effort to promote the ideals of democratic media. This year the activities of Media Democracy Week take place in the face of growing corporate opposition as forces in Washington, DC are clearing the way for another round of mergers and consolidation. |
