Approximately 40 GEO members and allies are SITTING IN at the Swanlund Administration Building right now! They are blockading the entrances to the building, preventing the 100+ employees of Swanlund from getting to work, including the Provost and the Chancellor! They can either negotiate with us, or arrest us. |

Approximately 40 GEO members and allies are SITTING IN at the Swanlund Administration Building right now! They are blockading the entrances to the building, preventing the 100+ employees of Swanlund from getting to work, including the Provost and the Chancellor! They can either negotiate with us, or arrest us.
Come join supporters outside Swanlund, or come to the GEO rally at Swanlund, scheduled for 10:00! Call the Board of Trustees at 333-1920 and encourage them to do the right thing and negotiate with GEO! Swanlund is on the southeast corner of Sixth St. and John in Campustown.
Our demand: We demand that the Board of Trustees and the UI Administration negotiate an out-of-court settlement that respects the express wishes of graduate employees for union representation. We insist that this agreement be made as a public promise and written down in a signed, official letter.
Why are we doing this? Today the Board of Trustees arrives in town for a two-day meeting. The Administration always claims that they are unable to negotiate with us, but today all the key people are in town and available to reach an agreement. We want to put them in a position where they can either negotiate with us, or arrest us. In addition, this BOT meeting is their last opportunity to agree with us before our planned April work stoppage. Nobody wants to have a strike if we can avoid it. By demonstrating our resolve today, we show our willingness to suffer personal inconvenience before subjecting our students to another work stoppage.
Come on out and support the GEO today!

I just visited the GEO action and have some tidbits to report.
The BOT was reportedly visibly taken aback when someone announced, during their meeting, that the occupation was taking place.
There is currently a picket line outside and about 40 GEO members inside the building.
University police are at Swanlund to maintain order. They have not arrested anyone and are currently allowing the occupation to continue. I think I overheard something about food not being allowed to be brought into the building.
There has been no response from the BOT or administration so far, and the GEO is not going anywhere.
News from the BOT meeting: the BOT has decided that it cannot compromise on the Chief issue. Either the Chief goes, or stays. |
