The sad part is the people who should be paying attention to this mostly just don't seem to get it, according to the comments posted below the article at the link given. It looks like there is still plenty of the racism that drives such caricatures as "Chief Illiniwek" in Illinois also alive and well in Nebraska. People may want to go to the site linked below and try to turn the direction of the discussion around. |
GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Unable to persuade a school district to drop a mascot name that offends them, some American Indian students at the University of Northern Colorado have named their intramural basketball team "the Fighting Whities."
Led by Solomon Little Owl, director of Native American Student Services at the university, the team chose a white man as its mascot to raise awareness and understanding of stereotypes that some cultures endure.
"The message is: Let's do something that will let people see the other side of what it's like to be a mascot," Little Owl said. "I am really offended by this mascot issue, and I hope the people that support the Eaton mascot will get offended by this."
They are upset with Eaton High School for using an Indian caricature on the team logo. The team is called the Reds.
Eaton School District Superintendent John Nuspl said the logo is not derogatory, and he called the group's criticism insulting. |

I'm not too fond of the formulation "American Indian" (are they referring to people who IMMIGRATED here with such a term?) used in this story, but it also offers another chance for people to comment.

Personally, I prefer the term "American Indian". The typical PC terminolgy of "Native American" is far more irritating to me. On its face it's not even properly descriptive. Using literal definitions, anyone born and raised in America could call themselves "Native American". Also, we did indeed immigrate here. We just did it a few thousand years before you did. |

For this to have any grip here in C-U, either they'd need to change their name to a 'tribal' one (fighting coloradans? fighting prospectors?) or we should become 'The Fighting Redskins". Sounds considerably worse to me.
Then again, we could adopt their jersey motto, to "Everything's going to be all red". Just doesn't fly.
Thus far, I've heard what religion and people the Chief evokes, but never what specific *race*. Can't be 'American Indians' alone, or he'd wear redface.
But I suppose 'racist' gets in more money than 'sacreligious'... |

I've dropped a note to an old friend who now lives in Greeley (got his DMA here in CU about a dozen years ago), and I'll let you folks know what I find out. |

Wow!
Finally something named after us pinkish folks. Even though I am not into sports, this may be a T-shirt worth getting. Any sources of supplies on this item?
Oddly, I do not feel belittled, mocked or put down, but pleasantly surprised.
Anyone who knows a source for the shirts please email me.

I'm am a white, or caucasion if you want to get all politically correct, male. I think the Fighting Whities is a great name for a team. It will put a lot of people in their place :-) Something like this has needed to be done for a long time....thanks to the Northern Colorado intramural team for finally doing it! |

Mascots are chosen to represent powerful images. You don't have teams named "The Slugs" or "The Mice". As a person with Irish ancestry I am proud that Notre Dame chose to be the "Fighting Irish" and I fail to see why any group would not take similar pride in being an power icon.
And hey, how 'bout them WASPs! Now that's a mascot I can really relate to! :-) |
