Student Peace Action raised a 50-foot inflatable missile on the Univ. of Illinois Quad to protest heightened military spending by the Bush Administration for its War on Terrorism.
Of particular concern to activists was news leaked last weeked by the L.A. Times of the Bush Administration's "Contingency Plans" to use nuclear force on Russia, China, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Libya and Syria. Proposed circumstrances warranting nuclear response by the U.S. include the following: military attack by Iraq on Israel, invasion of Taiwan by China, and invasion of South Korea by North Korea.
This afternoon's protest will be followed by a candlelight vigil on the Illinois Quad starting at 8pm, held in rememberance of lives lost in the Sept. 11th attacks and in the War in Afghanistan. |
