Per the Champaign County Clerk's Office web site at 11:53 pm Tuesday night, Democratic candidates for all contested city council races and the mayoral race have won their respective offices. |
Of particular interest are the results for the Ward 1 race, where Republican University student Buzz Langhofer challenged the Democratic incumbent Esther Patt and the results for Ward 4 where there was a three-way race between Democratic incumbent Laura Huth, Republican David Wood and Independent Charles McCaffrey. Eyes were on the ward 4 race especially because Independent McCaffrey won the support of the incumbent mayoral candidate Tod Satterthwaite, who failed to endorse Huth, the Democrat in that race.
As of 11:53 PM with all 23 Urbana precincts reporting, the Democratic incumbents can safely be called the winners, with Huth gaining 475 votes to her opponents' combined 269, and Patt winning 387 and her challenger getting just 89 votes.
In ward 4, the site of a heated primary battle for the Democratic candidacy, Democrat Danielle Chenoweth beat Joseph Rouse 310 votes to 69. Democrat Milton Otto won ward 7 with 773 votes to Republican Dennis Dautzenberg's 576. The alderman races in two wards were uncontested, with Democrat Ruth Wyman winning ward 2 and Republican Joseph Whelan winning ward 6.
Democratic incumbent Tod Satterthwaite easily won another term as mayor with 2701 votes to Republican Eddie Dalton's 1617. Right now it is unknown how many votes were made for the Green Party's write-in candidate Al Weiss, since there are no results posted for write-in candidates on the County Clerk's website.
In the Champaign County referendum to switch to single-member districts, the Nays outweighted the Yeahs, 8638 to 5072. |
