Community Health Partnership Selects FAIR SHARE
Priorities as Targets for Working Groups
Last month we reported that FAIR SHARE members were pleased when the Community Health
Partnership group process highlighted the access to care issues which our members had already
identified as priorities.
On March 23, the CHP met again to form working task oriented groups for the selected
priorities. Of the 14 original priorities voted on in February, nine were actually populated by
individuals representing organizations committed to directing their resources and/or knowledge
toward programs to help people. Of those 9, affordable dental access, provider policies on
financial services (combined with affordability), prescription drugs, culturally competent
providers, and transportation are FSC identified access to care problems in our community.
Now, these areas of concern will be addressed by organizations and individuals who have
expertise and the desire to improve access to care.
Now is the time for FAIR SHARE members who want to see improvements in access to health
care for low income, uninsured and underinsured members of our community to join the effort by
joining one or more of these groups. FAIR SHARE can bring a Community Benefits perspective
to these working groups, because our members know that non-profit health care providers have
a special responsibility, consistent with their charitable mission, to respond to health related
needs. This is especially true when the needs are identified by an inclusive community process
such as that just begun by the Community Health Partnership.
Come to the meeting and find out more about the working groups, and how you can plug in. As
a broad based community organization, the Community Health Partnership is investigating various
funding sources to speed the development of programs. Your organization may fit into these
efforts, and your expertise is needed!
Urbana City Property Tax Challenge Continues
At the March FAIR SHARE Coalition meeting, Mayor Tod Satterthwaite reported that the City
of Urbana is continuing the complicated discovery process in their investigation of the tax exempt
status of Carle Foundation, the University of Illinois and other non-profits. The city feels a
review of the revenue producing activities housed in certain tax-exempt buildings is appropriate.
While FAIR SHARE members want our non-profits to remain financially strong so that they may
fulfill their charitable mission, we remain committed to maintaining adequate funding to our
schools and other basic local governmental functions. FAIR SHARE also wants to ensure that
these tax-exempt charitable organizations use their public trust assets to meet the needs of the
community.
