Indymedia & Community Radio -- Support Your Community Radio Station WEFT Current rating: 0
01 Apr 2001
Indymedia and Community Radio go hand in hand. WEFT needs your support to keep independent media on the local airwaves.

Champaign-Urbana's community radio station WEFT is just staring its Spring Pledge Drive. Please give them a call and pledge some money. Become a member for just $40.00. Call now: 359-9338.
WEFT 90.1 FM has provided an invaluable radio outlet for many of the radio pieces produced by the Urbana-Champaign IMC in the last few months. This is airtime that is virtually impossible to get outside of a community radio station. The local community is very lucky to have such a station which most communities, including large cities, lack.

Many local progressives had hoped that they would be able to add another non-commercial progressive radio station to the local airwaves and applied for a low-power fm radio license. Unfortunately, intervention from Congress killed the opportunity for such a station here in Chamapaign_urbana and in most cities. If anything, this goes to show how badly we need to support WEFT and keep it on the air as the only radio station where anyone from the community can become a broadcaster. It is the only station that will accept programming from anyone, including your local Independent Media Center.

It's absurd that East-Central Illinois can have 3 pop country radio stations but only one community station, which tries to serve the all the other interests, tastes and needs completely forgotten in our commercial media. We should have 3 WEFT's and just one station to play the same 40 songs now heard in some form from 5 or more stations. Unfortunately our reality is just one WEFT, and each of us must do what we can to keep it on the air.

WEFT is a community institution that has kept the indpendent media spirit alive in East Central Illinois for almost 20 years. If you value an indpendent radio voice and support what IMCs are trying to do, you owe it to yourself to tune in and support community radio WEFT.

Become a member of WEFT for just $40.00 a year. Tune in to WEFT right now at 90.1 FM, and give them a call with your support at 217-359-9338. Make sure that there's a place where the U-C IMC can bring indpendent media to the airwaves. Make sure there's a place where you can become the media.
