Parkland College will be the site of the second Black Male Symposium on Friday, Feb. 22 from 8am to 3:30pm. A working lunch is included.
Registration is free and open to any member of the community that wants to learn more about the many issues that stand in the way of young black males succeding in life in our community. As important as defining the problems is, even more important is acting to resolve the factors that stand in the way of personal development for young black men, particularly for those in the fields of education and mentoring. Registration is encouraged before Feb. 15, if possible, and can be done by contacting Margot Williams at 353-2683 or at Room A-122 at Parkland College.
The keynote speakers for this event will be Dr. Ronald B. Mincy, Professor of Social Policy and Social Work at Columbia University, and Dr. Margaret Beale Spencer, Professor of Psychology in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania.
Participants can choose among a number of small group discussions that focus on schools, church-based initiatives, entrepreneurship, family, health, law enforcement/judicial, media & communications, and mentoring. All these groups would benefit from an as wide as possible range of viewpoints from interested community members. The author attended the first Black Male Symposium in 2000 and found it was time well-spent and that it was a good way to meet others interested in improving our community. |
