Nuclea Weapons Lab Recruiting at UIUC Feb. 14th Current rating: 0
11 Feb 2002
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which designs and tests nuclear weapons, will interview students at Illini Union for jobs on Thurs Feb. 14th from 8L30 to 4:30 PM. Members of AWARE and former Livermore residents will leaflet and educate students outside the building throughout the day. Please join us. A MINE IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE. We will have pledge for scientists not to work for mass destrucdtion.
This Thursday, February 14th, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will be at the Illini Union interviewing students for jobs. This will go on from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM The Livermore Lab was founded by Edward Teller, "father" of the Hydrogen Bomb, and is one of the the three national laboratories whose job is designign and testing nuclear bombs. Although current regulations state that no such design and testing may take place, the Lab has been continuing development of nuclear weapons under the guise of "stockpile stewardship", which although they say it is for safety, retrofits are being made on nuclear weapons, and various kinds of testing are occurring, to improve capabilities, in effect making new weapons out of old ones. The Lab also has a reprehensible record of radioactive contamination and flawed safety policies.

Recently, a young scientist from MIT quit his job at LLNL because he was told his work was for safety, and he found out it was being used to design nuclear weapons.

Members of AWARE and Student Peace Action will be outside the Union Building with literature explaining why students should carefully examine what they want to do with their lives, and whether their careers should be building/enhancing life or destroying it. The slogan "A mind is a terrible thing to Waste" will be the message.

The Scientists' Pledge is being distributed nationally to students and graduates, a simple pledge not to allow their talents to be used for mass destruction. The Pledge will be distributed outside the Union.

For information please contact Barbara Dyskant, who lived in the Livermore area for about 10 years and is now a local resident and member of AWARE. E-mail at bdyskant (at) earthlink.net, or call her at 3352-3670.

IF NO MORE SCIENTIFIC MINDS ARE SOLD FOR NUCLEAR DESIGN WE CAN PUT AN END TO NUCLEAR WAR.
A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE!!
