Feds Shut Down raisethefist.com; Indymedia Next? Current rating: 0
25 Jan 2002
Modified: 26 Jan 2002

Federal Agents today raided the home and confiscated the servers and all political literature of the founder of www.raisethefist.com an anarchist indymedia website.
Please educate yourselves about the continuing incursion of the federal government into all of our basic rights. In a blatent act of selective harrassment, federal law enforcement and security personnel with the aid of local law enforcement have raided the home of the founder of the website that stood for real resistence to the injustice of the current corporate wolld hegemony. If you havent already heard anything about this, find out more here. Indymedia could well be next if we dont do anything about the crimes of the federal government:

when you pick through all the squabbling on indymedia, a disturbing picture emerges. seems RTF was doing things like documenting police brutality; it's no wonder the feds wanted it shut down.

one poster points out that we need to think about moving to decentralized P2P networks to protect the indymedia network from being able to be compromised by the confiscation of individual servers and disk drives. wise words.
Update: RAID ON RAISETHEFIST.COM (CONFIRMING ISSUES... CONCERNS..ETC..)
Current rating: 0
26 Jan 2002
1) sherman cannot be on AIM because he doesn't have any computers anymore. He will be on periodically at times when at computers in other locations (friends house ..etc..etc..)

2) if trying to call sherman, if there is no answer you can leave a message. please be aware that both lines are tapped. do not say anything that might incriminate yourself

3) about raisethefist:

raisethefist was an anarchist/activist collective/independent media organization. It's political affiliation was anarchism. Raisethefist organizes, helps to promote, endorses several demonstrations, reports on them .. etc..etc. The site is made up of a collective of people who basically provide articles. Raisethefist.com was being ran off a network within sherman's home. The Los Angeles Anarchist Collective (LAAC, http://LAanarchists.org) was also being ran off this network, so that site is also down.

4) sherman is in los angeles, at a friends house doing work on legal stuff.. he'll be back home in a few days.

5) again, contacting sherman won't be as easy as it was before, because he has NO COMPUTERS. Everything was taken. The only time he will be online is if he is using a friends computer, or a public computer (library ..etc.) .. HOWEVER, you can still email sherman at food_should_be_free (at) yahoo.com .. messages can be relayed to him through that email address

6) just to confirm several specifics about the raid,

- it happened at approximately 4PM

- about 25-30 FBI, Secret Service, LAPD, and LASD participated in the raid, most of them were FBI.

- there was a 25 page warrant. It is not clear what the charges will be, many of the specifics cannot be discussed over the internet, but this is a serious issue, and there will most likely be a load of charges against sherman for running raisethefist.com, the material presented on the site, amongst other things (which cannot be discussed over the internet).

- people are encouraged to organize demonstrations. If in/around L.A county, the demonstration should be in front of the Westood federal building. Demonstrations would be good to help draw awareness to the situation.

- at this time, it's not yet sure how soon - or if raisethefist.com will ever be back online. If anyone has saved images from the site, or preferably CACHE from the site (especially the raisethefist.com logo), DON'T DELETE IT. Please save it to a disk so we can help get the broken pieces of the site together, and hopefully rebuild it in the future. I'm assuming that there will have to be a new webmaster for the site for the time being .. the domain, raisethefist.com would also have to be moved to a different host.

if you have any questions, please contact food_should_be_free (at) yahoo.com

again, there was a 25 page warent. at this time it is not certain what the charges will be, but sherman was told he was in 'serious trouble'. (however you'd like to interpret that).
