On April 1, 2001, EPIC (Education for Palestinian-Israeli Coexistence), a student group from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign will be hosting an all-day conference dealing with the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel, both its history and the current situation.
EPIC was created when tensions rose on campus during the Fall ’00 semester. After confrontations between various students with opposing feelings on the issue, many others recognized a need to create a forum whereby students and community members could be educated on the situation and therefore be better prepared to make informed judgments. To this end, members from Amnesty International, the Muslim Student Association, Hillel Student Board, Students for Palestine, and Jews on Campus came together and formed EPIC.
“Together, we hope to create something that will bring people together, facilitate understanding, and make a difference,” says Mike Bullerman, president of Amnesty International.
The conference will be on April 1, from 10am-5pm, which registration starting at 9:30, and will be in the University of Illinois Student Union in Urbana. Lunch is provided if you pre-register. Keynote speakers are Joseph Aaron, editor of the Chicago Jewish News, and Raeed Tayeh, writer for the Washington Report on Middle Eastern Affairs and officer of the Islamic Association of Palestine. Other speakers from throughout the state and University professors will conduct workshops and give lectures. To learn more or register, please visit our website at www.epic2001.org. |
