Urbana Mayor Tod Satterthwaite, who is fast becoming the Joe McCarthy of our little town, has begun seeing red in our city council elections again, this time in Ward 5. Portraying Democratic incumbent Laura Huth as a dangerous "radical", Tod has broken party ranks and endorsed independent candidate Chuck McCaffrey.
Now this puts me in a bit of a pickle. You see, I know Chuck McCaffrey. I worked with Chuck McCaffrey. And I came to know him as a kind, considerate, and fair person. I like him *and* Laura.
And now Tod has to go and stand between me and my friends.
Here's a modest proposal. First, let's concede that Tod's wrong again with his "dangerous radical" schtick. After all, if 61% of Ward 4 are all dangerous radicals as Tod claimed earlier this year, I think he should be concentrating on surrounding us and cutting off our supply
lines, not trying to start a fight between two very nice candidates in the next ward over.
Secondly, if Tod likes Chuck as much as I do, let's have Tod endorse Chuck for mayor and Laura for City Council. Then he can quit doing all those pesky city-government tasks and focus on hunting down the "reds" that walk among us while Chuck can win or lose his own campaign on his own merits. And I can wholeheartedly support both of my
friends. |

The reason I'm writing to you is, in all honesty, I don't know how to tackle a problem I'm having. You see, I live right across the street from the "honorable" Mayor Satterthwaite and am right in the midst of a major problem that is without a doubt caused by this distinguished gentleman. Before I begin, I would like to inform you that I am a homeowner and student at the University of Illinois who is registered to vote. Apparantly, these facts mean nothing to Tod as we have been continuously harassed by him since moving in this August. Todd has repeatedly called the police on my roomates and I for noise violations. I would like to stress that in every instance that the police were called, there was never more than five people within our home, the windows and doors were always shut, and music was not being played. In fact, in several instances we were watching movies when the police showed up. To make matters worse, during the latest ticket issuing, Todd showed up at our doorstep while we were speaking with the increasingly compassionate -to-our-problem officers, and began to berate us EXTREMELY loudly with some of the foulest curses I have ever hear. Is this the way a mayor of fine city such as Urbana is supposed to act? Does someone who claims to be a proud alum of the university really care about the student body if he calls the police repeatedly for insignificant noise less than two blocks from campus? I don't know what to do or who to turn to, but my roomates and I are powerless against the Mayor of the town we call home and the police he commands. Please, I beg you, help us help your cause and see that justice is done in this situation.
Sincerely,
James Devereaux |
