Got Ideas for the New IMC Building? Get Involved! |

The IMC Space working group meets every Wenesday at 8pm at the IMC. If you have ideas for or want to help with the move to the new building and filling it with exciting projects, then you want to be at the weekly Space group meetings. |
The IMC Space working group meets every Wednesday at 8pm at the IMC. Until we make the move to our new facility at the beginning of June, we will be meeting at our current space at 218 W. Main St. in Urbana.
If you have ideas for or want to help with the move to the new building, as well as filling it with exciting projects, then you want to be at the weekly Space group meetings.
Whether you're a longtime IMC member excited by finally moving to a space big enough to serve all our needs or someone new -- who wants to know how you can make media, help operate an all-ages performance venue, get your own radio program, or an artist interested in securing studio space -- the Space meeting is where you can work on building your dreams into our new building at 202 S. Broadway in Urbana.
The IMC is a volunteer organization that depends on interested and involved people organized into working groups to operate its varied programs. The groups all make decisions based on participatory consensus. While the new building is very exciting news, what is most important about the IMC are the people -- the IMC is dependent on the people who participate to guide its activities. The Space group invites your active participation at any of our meetings, all of which are open to the public.
There are a number of action items that need to be addressed, but here are just a few to give you an idea of what we will be discussing at this and future meetings:
* Plan a tour of the new building and design meeting in late May for IMC members
* Coordinate work to design, contract, and renovate interior to separate post office space from rest of building and improve access for IMC uses
* Plan and coordinate move of IMC from present location into new building at the end of May/beginning of June
* Solicit potential tenants and coordinate filling non-IMC space in new building with them
* Continue the successful Capital Campaign to raise funding to pay for various renovations to fully adapt building to IMC needs, including equipping our new performance space

I can't do the Wednesday Space Meeting anymore, (so feel free to move it back to 7PM if y'all want to)--but I thought I'd pass these few ideas along:
1. Green roof. Replace decaying section of Post Office roof with "green roof"--A rooftop garden which moderates summertime temperatures, lowering HVAC costs and producing yummy squash. The Urbana Permaculture Project can help.
2. A Union-owned clothing manufacturing shop. Brooke Anderson is our local UNITE organizer. She can tell you if this is feasible. Ideally (if you ask me) they'd be making "NO SWEAT" low-cut sneakers--A very visible product with a college-age target market...
3. An outdoor newsstand/kiosk in the little nook on the North side of the building, just east of the cornerstone.
4. Tool library. Woodworking tools. Community cherry picker. Community backhoe. Community pickup truck.
5. Stretch the Farmer's Market all the way to the East parking lot of the P. O.
6. Partner with Lincoln Square & City of Urbana to create a great East-West biking and walking path past the South side of the P. O.
7. IMC-Multitrack. A multi-track audio recording studio which puts out CD's of IMC-affiliated artists and makes live recordings of IMC shows. Jay Eychaner, I know you want this.
8. A Goodwill store outlet.
9. A small coffeehouse. Of course.
10. Plant more trees!
11. Sustainable electricity and fuel: UCIMC hosts Urbana Sustainables, which does solar panels, passive solar, natural building, biodiesel, ethanol, microbial fuel cells, earth-tube HVAC, biomass turbines, etc., etc. Todd Rusk and David Tcheng can make this happen.
12. ISEN?
13. School for Designing a Society?
14. The Champaign County Community Cannery. "Yes, We Can! " If you've never heard of this local organization, that's because it doesn't exist yet. But it should.
15. Roof-top concert series.
16. Second-Hand Rose Antique Emporium.
17. UIUC School of Architecture needs new offices for their grad. students.

I would add to the list:
The U.S.'s first National Museum of Progressive Acitism. This could be a high-profile project that would document a historical 'playbook' for the newest generation of activists. There's nothing that needs to be done (organize, unionize, etd) that hasn't been done before...and we have a couple of generations of some of the world's most prominent progressives right here in town...

Summary:
When operationalized in 2001, the Clean Energy Community Trust was re-named the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation (ICECF). This independent, nonprofit foundation was authorized by the Illinois legislature, and its board of directors is primarily appointed by state government officials. The ICECF invests in clean energy development and land preservation efforts to improve environmental quality in the state. The ICECF supports programs and projects that will improve energy efficiency, develop renewable energy resources, and preserve and enhance natural areas throughout Illinois. In 2001 and 2002, the ICECF awarded more than $17 million in grants for energy efficiency, renewable energy and natural areas conservation projects in Illinois.
The ICECF provides funding to nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and state and local government agencies serving Illinois residents.
