Ladies and Laddies Against War met Thursday, Dec. 6th at I-74 and Prospect. The News-Gazette did run an article in the Dec. 7th edition about the protest. We will begin meeting on Saturdays (starting Dec 8th) from 12:30-1:30. All are welcome. |
Dec. 6th 2001, Champaign-Ladies and Laddies Against War met on Thursday at the corner of I-74 and Prospect Avenue in Champaign, slightly after noon. We gathered there to protest the US war in Afghanistan. We exited the van, having parked next to a company pick-up truck. Two white males in mildly patriotic dress approached us, and stood by their truck as we piled out of the van and unloaded our banners and signs. They did give some among us the heebee-jeebies, we found out later. After locking the van we set off for our regular intersection.
We had been told that some folks from the News-Gazette would be there this week We had previously been told by the News-Gazette that what we were doing was not news. They did show up as promised, talking with several people and taking pictures of everybody. And indeed, they did run an article about us on Dec. 7th. Drivers responded to us in a variety of ways. They honked, gave us the finger, shook their heads, waved, gave us thumbs up and down, and suggested we find employment. We in turn provided them with material to read and think about. Some of us held signs and waved, while others handed out fliers to people. At one point a Champaign police officer showed up and asked everyone to get out of the median, and shortly thereafter someone from WDWS showed up as well. Also present at this event was the public i.
We left at around 1:00. Upon returning to the van, we discovered that some brave soul had indeed done their patriotic duty by letting the air out of two of the van’s tires. Luckily someone had a generator in their car that would reinflate the tires, as they had been emptied and not slashed. Ladies and Laddies Against War will meet at I-74 and Prospect
again this Saturday (Dec. 8th) from 12:30-1:30. It is suggested that folks be careful not to let passersby see that they have signs when exiting their cars. |
