In March 2005, Adopt A Doctor, an international nonprofit based in Providence, Rhode Island, began supplementing the incomes of three medical doctors practicing in Haiti. Dr. Marise Saget is an anesthesiologist practicing in Port au Prince. Dr. Max Philippe is an OB/GYN practicing in Delmas. Dr. Jean-Jacques Cameau is an opthamologist. Stipends in the amount of $100 monthly are sent to the doctors in exchange for their promise to remain in Haiti and continue practicing for seven years.
The statistics for Haiti are staggering. Life expectancy is currently at 57 years. Infant mortaility is 92 per 1000 births. 80% of Haitians live below the poverty line, and 50% of the children are malnourished. Clearly there is a critical need for the long-term commitments these and other doctors are making through the supplemental assistance of Adopt-A-Doctor.
“We hope that this is just the beginning of what will be a revolutionary effort to increase the number of physicians practicing in the world’s most troubled countries. Through our financial support we hope to promote the building of sustainable health care systems that will serve these populations well into the future,” said Chairman Ray Rickman.
“We are proud to add Haiti and these three physicians to our growing community of doctors worldwide. Continued support from individuals and entities here in the United States and elsewhere in the world will enable us to add more doctors in the near future,” said Executive Director Gregory Vickrey.
Adopt A Doctor is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to support doctors in the world’s poorest nations. Founded in 2003, Adopt A Doctor aspires to solve the problem of high turnover rates and lack of experienced physicians working in these countries by providing stipends and other support directly to doctors on the ground. Currently in Haiti there are only 650 doctors serving a population of 8 million and in rural areas there is only one physician per 30,000 people.
Over the next 2 years Adopt A Doctor will increase its support to 40 doctors in Haiti and will continue to grow its efforts in each of its three other nations: Malawi, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. |
