Surprisingly, the Chicago Tribune, Sun Times, News Gazzette and Journal Star have left out mention of Gov. Ryan's proposal to privatize parts of the prison industry in Illinois. The Pantagraph has been the only Illinois newspaper reporting this issue. If this goes through, it will be a permanant disaster for public employees and reduced quality for prisoners in respone to september 11th. |
Ask Students Against Sweatshops about Sodexho-Mariott (a major national provider of food services to universities, public schools, hospitals and prisons) and they will tell you that this corporation is associated with the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the largest owner and operator of private prisons. USAS chapters have participated in campaigns during the past 2 years to get Sodexho-Mariott off their campus and several colleges have already won. For more information check out www.nomoreprisons.org
On a related point, Gov. Ryan's recent budget cut proposals include privatizing food and housekeeping services at state correctional centers and mental health and developmental disability facilities.
Building sweatshop conditions in Illinois prisons is not an appropriate response to Sept 11th and current budget demands.

The News-Gazette did actually mention the private prison issue. I missed it on first glance.

Employees stunned by news of cutbacks
By M.K. Guetersloh and Bob Holliday
Pantagraph staff
SPRINGFIELD -- Food service and housekeeping workers at several state institutions on Wednesday said they felt like Gov. George Ryan gave them an unwelcome early Christmas
present -- a budget-cutting plan that might cost them their jobs.
"This is very upsetting to me, regardless of the fact that it's holiday time because I have no other means of support," said Carol Zang, who is on the dietary staff at
William Fox Developmental Center in Dwight. "I hope it doesn't go through."
Privatizing food and housekeeping services at prisons, mental-health centers and facilities for developmentally disabled residents was part of a plan Ryan announced Tuesday. Also included in his plan to close a $500 million gap were closing Joliet Correctional Center and ordering one-day furloughs for 60,000 state workers.
"The timing is unreal," said union official Bill Hess, noting that Christmas is near. Hess is president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees
Local 2073 at Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln.
There are about a dozen food-service workers who prepare three meals a day for 1,900 inmates and 265 correctional officers at Logan, Hess said. He's worried about those
workers' financial security.
Hess said he suspects there would be no cost savings in privatization in any case. |

Ryan wants another $154 million in cuts
By Kurt Erickson
Statehouse bureau chief
...
The union representing thousands of state employees called on the governor to continue investigating alternatives to budget cuts.
Henry Bayer, executive director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31, said a proposed prescription drug plan bottled up in the Senate for more than a year could save the state upwards of $200 million annually, staving off the need for some cuts.
Bayer also said Ryan earlier rejected plans to privatize services at state prisons, but now is talking about privatizing housekeeping and food service programs at state facilities, including those in Dwight, Pontiac and Lincoln.
"There are real security issues involved in having private contractors bringing minimum wage workers into prisons to supervise prisoners who have access to knives, heavy kitchen objects and other implements," Bayer said.
State Rep. Dan Rutherford, R-Chenoa, sided with Bayer, saying, "I don't agree with the governor on some of the cuts he's doing."
Rutherford said there are no guarantees that privatizing food service at Pontiac Correctional Center will save money.
"I have not seen testimony that says doing that has some verifiable cost savings," said Rutherford.
State Rep. Dan Brady, R-Bloomington, said the cuts were unavoidable.
"I think that state government has enjoyed some good spending years. It has just come to a screeching halt. It's a terrible dilemma and its going to hurt terribly," said Brady. |
Alternative proposals |

Why can't there be an alternative proposal instead of privatizing Dietarys and Commissarys throughout the state? I work for the IDOC in Dietary and we Supervisors see countless ways to save the state much more than the paltry $2 million that Governor Ryan's privatization plan is projected to save. If we served ONLY dark meat chicken intead of the whole chicken, we would save $250,000 at our institution alone! Multiply that times 27 prisons. The Dietary manager at our facility has to spend $20,000 to $50,000 at the end of the fiscal year on "goodies" i.e. steaks for inmates, candy bars, ice cream sandwiches, etc. just so the state legislature doesn't cut our budget for the next fiscal year!!! AND he does this every year! There are countless ways to cut spending without privatizing. All of which could save millions more than the lousy $2 million on the table right now. Mike Martin |

I work at the lawrence c.c. the manger there was first hired under the impression that he would be running a private dietary. He treats the CFSS as if they were like dogs and contiually writes them up in an effort to make them quit get fired after acumulating so many suspension days. He has stated that by the time the union gets here to help you it will be to late. He contiually lies and intimidates any one who tries to oppose him.He stops promotion of senoir employees to keep them in their place so to speak.He also has the support of his CFSS3, and other supporters one CFSS2 and one CFSS1. These people keep a constant eye on everyone else and report their every move. I won't mention any names but;
