An open discussion of the proposed changes to the State Universities' Retirement System, featuring IL Senator Bill Brady, Lance Weiss (actuarial consultant for the Governor's Pension Commission), and Prof. J. Fred Giertz, member of SURS Board of Trustees. |
A Union of Professional Employees/Association of Academic Professionals/AFSCME 3700 co-sponsored forum/debate on "SURS Retirement Pensions Under Fire" will take place this coming Monday, April 18, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Room 210 (the General Lounge) of the Illini Union. With presentations by both a leading legislative critic of the Blagojevich pension cuts and a representative of the Governor's Budget Office, there's sure to be both media coverage and fireworks, so we hope to have a good turnout from the union community.
If Governor Blagojevich's budget proposal is enacted, employees at the University of Illinois--despite making all of their required employee contributions to the State Universities Retirement System (SURS)--could lose billions of
dollars of anticipated retirement benefits. And what we don't know CAN hurt us. So we've brought together three leading experts, with widely divergent perspectives :
State Senator Bill Brady, a dissenting member of the Governor's Pension Commission and the ranking Republican on the Senate's Insurance and Pensions Committee, who believes that parts of the Governor's pension-reduction plan are both
unwise and unconstitutional;
Lance Weiss, whom the Governor's Office of Management & Budget is sending as its representative. Weiss (Deloitte Consulting) serves as an actuarial consultant for both the
Governor's Pension Commission and his Office of Management and Budget;
Professor J. Fred Giertz (Department of Economics, Institute for Government and Public Affairs, UIUC, and member of SURS's Board of Trustees and chair of its investment committee).
The floor will be open for your questions and
discussion. This will be a good time not just to inform ourselves but to make our voices heard. All are invited. We hope you'll be able to join us.
In solidarity,
Mark Leff
