Rev. James Holiman in the Activist Forum Speaker Series
“Deep Memories and Uprising Hope”
Tuesday, April 19th from 7-9pm
Wisegarver Lounge (1st floor of the IDF)**
Free and open to the public! |
Rev. James Holiman is the Campus Minister Emeritus at the IDF. He served as the Campus Minister and Executive Director of IDF since August 1st, 1963 and retired in 2000. Raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Holiman was ordained in 1958. He worked at an inner-city parish in Youngstown, OH before serving at the IDF. During those 37 years, Rev. Holiman distinguished himself as a leader in community work on social justice issues, including civil rights, anti-war (Vietnam, Persian Gulf), women's rights, GLBT rights, the Sanctuary movement of the 1980s, and access to health care. He has taught and nurtured countless young progressive activists, encouraging them to understand their idealism and to dedicate themselves to human rights and social justice.
In 1999, he received the “Lifetime Achievement” Award from the Champaign County Health Care Consumers. That same year, Holiman was inducted into the Disciples Society for Faith and Reason, joining a small group of distinguished Disciple theologians before him.
In his talk entitled, “Deep Memories and Uprising Hope,” Holiman will be reflecting upon his lifelong dedication to social justice work and discussing his inspirations and motivations that led him to focus his ministry service on peace with justice struggles.
The Activist Forum Speaker Series, a staff-run program of the IDF, brings in several long-term activists each year to reflect on their social justice work. The presentation provides insight into the issues that each activist has worked on. The series provides a source of inspiration and experience for people who are currently active in social justice work, or those who are looking to become involved. Some speakers that have appeared so far include Mike Doyle, Barry Romo, Esther Patt, and Mark Weisbrot.
Cosponsored by: Champaign County Health Care Consumers, Channing-Murray Foundation, McKinley Foundation, Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative, St. Jude Catholic Worker House, University YMCA, UC Friends Meeting, and Vietnam Veterans Against the War (CU Chapter).
**Wisegarver Lounge is wheelchair accessible. The IDF is located at the NW corner of Springfield and Wright St. in Champaign. Limited free parking is available in the adjacent parking lot. |
