Alert - Help to revive cumulative voting for Illinois House seats! |
The Illinois House of Representatives should seek to support the revival of
cumulative elections for House seats through a recent amendment just introduced
and supported by Rep Feigenholtz, Rep Erwin, Rep Currie, Rep Turner, Rep
Scott, Rep Winkel, Rep Burke and Rep Julie Hamos (HJRCA-4). To support
cumulative voting is to support the voices of Illinois' citizens no matter where they
live. It is time to reverse the one bad aspect of the Cutback Amendment (1980).
HJRCA-4 would level the focus of power that has been concentrated in the House
leadership and seek to empower lower level legislators.
HJRCA-4 would create 39 3-member or "Multi-member" districts. The Illinois
House as we know it today would be decreasing its rolls by one Representative.
Illinois was the only state in the USA to use cumulative voting. Today it has many
proponents including Gov Ryan, Sec of State Jesse White,
former Gov Edgar, Rep Mikva, Treasurer Topinka.
