Live Jazz @ IMC: Groove Yard, Friday Nov. 30, 6 PM |

On Friday, November 30 at 8 pm, the jazz quartet Groove Yard will be playing at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center. |
Groove Yard plays small combo jazz a la Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Thelonius Monk, as well as originals and have appeared in many venues locally as well as being featured on the WEFT Sessions. The line-up of the band is:
Doug Schroer, harmonica
Paul Freedman, guitar
Rob Hammond, bass
Michael Powers, drums
Groove Yard will appear 8 PM, Friday Nov. 30 at the U-C IMC, 218 W. Main St., Downtown Urbana.

Groove Yard Jazzes Up IMC |

Not a lot of people came for the Groove Yard jazz concert,
on Friday, November 30 but some important people came: John Wason, Sarah Kanouse, Jeff Glassman, and Sandra Ahten.
As for me, I adore the band highly, although it was the first
time I saw them. I saw other local jazz ensembles--Ear Doctor and Bass Case, to name a few, but Groove Yard was really
something. Now, a little bit about the musicians...
Paul Freedman's guitar style is a mixture of the styles
of John Pizzarelli and a little bit of George Benson. (I
adore George Benson's unusual style of jazz guitar because
he does it with a lot of soul.)
Powers' drum set is laid back. No bass drum like the other
ensembles--only a tom-tom, snare, hi-hat, and a ride
cymbal, which is sufficient enough. He plays almost like
Bill French of the local band Base Case. (Bill adores
rim shot fills in jazz, but Powers does it a teeny less.)
The jazz done by this group was so lively because all of the
players were enthusiastic, even though there were no vocal
selections from them.
As an extremely gifted dancer myself, some of the jazz
tunes they played, especially "Blue Monk" (of Thelonious
Monk), made me dance. |
