BALLOT MEASURE 9: Thursday, April 14th , from 7-9pm @ IDF
In Oregon's 1992 election, Ballot Measure 9 was proposed, an anti-gay initiative, which would have denied civil rights to gay people. It was defeated by a 53-47 percent margin. Director Heather MacDonald delves into this explosive debate by speaking with representatives from both sides; from brave members of the gay community who risked constant harassment and personal attacks to stand up for what they believed in, as well as Lon Mabon, sponsor of Measure 9 and Chair of the Oregon Citizen's Alliance, who summed it up as "a simple battle between good and evil." Kim Kranich, a member of the 85% coalition, will facilitate the discussion following the film.
The Human Rights Film series is cosponsored by: 85% Coalition, Activist Forum, Amnesty International #124, Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort (AWARE), Campus Greens, Channing-Murray Foundation, Common Ground Food Cooperative, El Centro por los Trabajadores, Feminist Majority, McKinley Foundation, Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative (PRC), South Asian Collective, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Social Action Committee, UC Friends Peace and Service Committee, UC-IMC Steering Group, Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), and the Women’s Direct Action Collective (WDAC).
The IDF is a pioneering peace with justice campus ministry. For more information about the film series or the IDF, please contact us at the IDF at (217) 352-8721, idf (at) prairienet.org, or visit our website at www.prairienet.org/idf.
