An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people are marching on Ft. Benning to end what they describe as the US Government's sponsorship of terrorism via School of the America's training of foreign military personnel.
Although confronted by a 10 foot high security fence topped with barbed wire and gates chained against protesting citizens, hundreds defied the police's threat of arrest for trespass. Crossing a white line painted to mark the boundary between the base and outside property, protestors were led by a contingent of 30 black shrouded, white faced people bearing coffins symbolizing those murdered by School of the Americas graduates.
Standing on Ft. Benning property before a sign identifying the base, the lead contingent laid their coffins on the ground and spattered themselves with symbolic "blood," staging a "die-in".
Other demonstrators continued to cross the line, proceeding to the chained gates, which they hung with crosses and flowers in memory of the martyred dead.
This river of humanity has moved forward for at least two hours, accompanied by a solemn recitation of the names of the dead punctuated by the marchers' answering chorus of "presente!" The procession continues. |
