Statewide ACLU meeting in CU to draw fundamentalist counterprotest |

On next week's statewide ACLU Emergency Summit, to be held in CU, and the possibility that a group called Stop the ACLU intends to counterdemonstrate. |
Next week -- April 9, the Illinois American Civil Liberties Union will be holding an "Emergency Summit" conference at the Hawthorne Suites -- the building with the TGIFriday's a few blocks west of the stadium. Students + ACLU members attend free; registration deadline is tomorrow.

Among the folks who have found out about it are some right-wing fundamentalist group called "Stop the ACLU Coalition" -- "Help us rid America of the ACLU before it's too late!" -- and they seem to be organizing a counterprotest. No telling whether or not it will actually happen -- the group looks pretty ad hoc -- but their site (www.stoptheaclu.org) sez the following:

Attn. Illinois citizens: On April 9th, the ACLU will meet in Champaign to perpetuate their left wing extreme radicalism. We need as many people to come out and stand up to the ACLU's agenda as we can get.Â
Although we need as many Illinois citizens as possible since we are standing up to the ACLU of Illinois, we welcome folks from anywhere in America to be a part of what we are doing to preserve America from ACLU filth. One person is coming all the way from Minneapolis to be a part of this groundbreaking event and a woman from Missouri who has testified before state legislatures on abortion and who knows the ACLU's participation in abortion will be sharing her expert testimony with our group. Will you be there?
We need at least a couple individuals who will help make banners and signs and carry them around as we stand up to the ACLU of Illinois' agenda. Can you help out?
Information is being updated as it becomes available and on a daily basis so check back often.Â

If I find out more, I'll post it here. Even if you don't attend the conference, a counter-counterprotest against these folks -- who are to the right of George Bush -- might not be a bad idea.
