Indy Media and the Last Crusade

reprinted from Foreign Policy Watchdog Fall2001 |
"Milwaukee doesn't have an Indymedia?" Robert McChesney asked a handful of
people lingering by the podium after his keynote speech at the annual Pledge
of Resistance Beans And Rice dinner.
"Milwaukee should have an Indymedia. I was reading the local paper yesterday
and this morning and, well, it's pretty terrible."
By Indymedia, McChesney means the independent media movement which began about
the time of the November, 1999 anti-globalisation demonstrations in Seattle and
which has quickly grown into 71 regional news sites in 41 countries. There are
at least 4 new news sites in the works.
The University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana, where McChesney teaches, has
a very active Independent Media Center (IMC) site at http://urbana.indymedia.org.
Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul have IMC's at http://chicago.indymedia.org and
http://tc.indymedia.org respectively.
The closest one to Milwaukee currently is the Madison IMC which can be reached
at http://madison.indymedia.org. Active members meet every other Monday somewhere
in the offices of WORT radio station.
Techies and editors at Madison IMC have already expessed willingness to help
Milwaukee with emotional support if interest does grow. Indymedia does everything
by consensus when at all possible and transparency is equally important.
If you'd like more information about how an "indy" begins these days go to

on whichever site you feel would benefit the news the most. Or start reading some
of the information at http://volunteer.indymedia.org to see the many other ways
you can help besides writing news. If you're technically inclined and wondering
where indy can use your help right away, roll up your sleeves and start wandering
around pages like http://tech.indymedia.org and http://todo.indymedia.org
A Milwaukee potential IMC discussion list already is underway and you're
welcome to read through the archives at:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-milwaukee
You needn't sign up for the list to read the archives, but if you'd like
to participate in the discussion of a brand new Milwaukee IMC,go to the list page
(http://lists.indymedia.org) and click on "imc-milwaukee."
Because Milwaukee, Wisconsin really should have an Indymedia. |
