Today and tomorrow, any student at the University of Illinois can spend five minutes to improve our democracy by starting with student government. There's an online vote to switch from winner-take-all elections to proportional representation and instant runoff voting. If you can, vote now! |
There's an online campaign to implement proportional representation and instant runoff voting for the student government at the University of Illinois.
Can you help me spread the electronic word to all campus progressives about the electronic vote for all students (graduate and undergraduate) on changing the Illinois Student Government from winner-take-all to proportional representation and instant runoff voting?
Please forward this email far and wide on every campus list you can think of -- and vote online RIGHT NOW! It takes five minutes.
This is potentially a big deal on improving our electoral systems for all elections, as people will get in the habit of ranking their candidates and recognizing that if a party gets 10% of the vote they should get 10% of the representation.
And it is very easy to vote: just go to www.uiuc.edu anytime Monday or Tuesday and vote there. Alternatively, go to www.isg.uiuc.edu for some information on Illinois Student Government and the referendum on proportional representation.
It isn't often when spending 5 minutes on a website can advance the progressive agenda -- especially for electoral reform. Students at the University have the chance to do so. Please help me spread the word far and wide to get out the vote.
Note that when we had this issue on the 1997 student ballot, we lost, even though there was no active opposition, because there wasn't an active campaign to get out the vote. Now, with online voting, we can wage an active
campaign to get out the vote much easier.
We can win this vote, if progressives hear about the election, go to www.uiuc.edu and vote.
Thanks for your help -- let's get the vote out (and online) and do it RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND!!
Thanks,
Dan Johnson-Weinberger |
