World Trade Organization Meetings in Qatar, November 9-13, Raise Questions About the Global Economy
Two years after the "Battle of Seattle", the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will hold their next big meeting in Qatar on 9-13 November. In Seattle, 1999, during the last WTO Ministerial, massive blockades and protests on the streets had contributed to the closure of the WTO conference. As public resistance against economic globalisation grew stronger, many subsequent major conferences could only take place behind high fences and "protected" from the public--for example the FTAA in Quebec or the G8 in Genova. Locating a conference in the small desert state of Qatar has been the most ambitious attempt yet to shut out public concerns. The "war on terrorism" has placed "anti-globalization" activism in a very new light. Despite this, people are planning protests against the WTO and the global economic system in many cities and countries.
